Leichhardt Projects

In January 2024, Leichhardt entered into a binding sale agreement with Dampier Salt Limited to acquire 100% of the Lake MacLeod assets and operations which include a privately-owned deep-water port, capable of handling up to 6Mtpa export capacity across both salt and gypsum products.

Government approvals were finalised with transfer of ownership to Leichhardt on 2 December 2024. Located approximately 70 kilometres from Carnarvon, Lake MacLeod comprises of both salt and gypsum operations. Lake MacLeod has been sustainably operating since the 1960’s from a perpetual brine resource under a State Agreement.

Lake MacLeod currently produces 1.5Mtpa of salt via a channel into the halite layer abstracting brine that is 10 x saltier than seawater. It has historically operated at a capacity of up to 3Mtpa of salt with the resource and current infrastructure supporting these levels. The Lake MacLeod salt is exported into the Asia-Pacific region for use as industrial salt.

Lake MacLeod is also producing approximately 1Mtpa of gypsum. The gypsum operation includes excavation and water leaching to produce a plasterboard and cement grade gypsum. The Lake MacLeod gypsum is predominantly exported to the Asia-Pacific region.

Lake MacLeod employs approximately 130 people all residing in Carnarvon and the surrounding area. This is key to our operation as we want to continue our local communities sharing in the benefits which our operations provide.
